About North American Area Codes
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) covers the United States, Canada, and 20 Caribbean territories under a single country-code (+1) umbrella. It was developed by AT&T and Bell Labs in 1947 to enable direct long-distance dialing without operator assistance, originally with 86 area codes covering the US and Canada. Today there are 408 active geographic codes, plus 7 toll-free codes, 2 premium-rate codes (900, 976), and several special service codes.
Each area code is a 3-digit prefix (called the NPA, for Numbering Plan Area) that identifies a geographic region or service type. Within each area code, the next 3 digits (the NXX, or central office prefix) identify the local exchange, and the final 4 digits identify the individual subscriber line. So every US/Canada phone number looks like (NPA) NXX-XXXX — 10 digits in total.
US area codes by state
The United States has 51 states plus the District of Columbia, each served by one or more area codes. California leads with the most area codes (36 codes), followed by Texas (28 codes) and New York (19 codes). At the other extreme, several states — including Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho (until 2017), Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming — still have just one area code covering the entire state.

Canadian area codes by province
Canada uses 56 area codes across its 13 provinces and territories. Ontario has the most (16 codes), followed by Quebec (12 codes) and British Columbia (6 codes). Canadian numbering is administered by the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA) under the same NANP framework.
Caribbean area codes
Twenty Caribbean nations and territories share the +1 country code with the US and Canada. Each has its own area code: 242 (Bahamas), 246 (Barbados), 264 (Anguilla), 268 (Antigua), 284 (British Virgin Islands), 340 (US Virgin Islands), 345 (Cayman Islands), 441 (Bermuda), 473 (Grenada), 649 (Turks and Caicos), 664 (Montserrat), 670 (Northern Mariana Islands), 671 (Guam), 684 (American Samoa), 721 (Sint Maarten), 758 (Saint Lucia), 767 (Dominica), 784 (Saint Vincent), 787 & 939 (Puerto Rico), 809/829/849 (Dominican Republic), 868 (Trinidad & Tobago), 876 (Jamaica), and 939 (Puerto Rico overlay).
Spam-call warning: Several Caribbean codes — particularly 876 (Jamaica), 809/829/849 (Dominican Republic), and 284 (British Virgin Islands) — are frequent sources of scam calls, including the "one-ring" callback scam. If you don't recognize a number from those codes, do not call back.
