How to look up area codes by state

The number of area codes per state varies widely. California has 36 active codes (most in the US), followed by Texas (28) and New York (19). At the other extreme, 12 states still have only one area code each: Alaska (907), Delaware (302), Hawaii (808), Maine (207), Montana (406), New Hampshire (603), North Dakota (701), Rhode Island (401), South Dakota (605), Vermont (802), and Wyoming (307).
State area code directory vs. city directory
A state directory lists every code assigned within a state's borders. A city directory (see our lookup by city tool) shows only the code(s) serving a specific city. For broad research, use the state directory. For finding which code a specific city uses, the city directory is faster.
