How to make an international call
From the US or Canada, dial 011 (the international access prefix), then the country code, then the local number. From most other countries, dial 00 instead of 011. From a mobile phone, you can often dial + (long-press 0) instead of the access prefix.

What is a country calling code?
A country calling code (also called an international dialing code or ISD code) is a 1- to 3-digit number prefix assigned to each country by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T). When you call internationally, you dial your country's access prefix (011 from the US/Canada, 00 from most of the world), then the destination country's calling code, then the local phone number.
The + symbol you sometimes see in front of a phone number is shorthand for "whatever your local international access prefix is." So +44 20 7946 0958 means: dial your access prefix, then 44 (UK), then the local London number 20 7946 0958.
Country calling codes are managed by the ITU-T (a UN agency) under the E.164 standard. The +1 code is shared by the entire North American Numbering Plan — the US, Canada, and 20+ Caribbean territories all use +1 followed by a 3-digit area code and 7-digit local number.
Country calling code ranges
The ITU assigns codes by world zone, which is why codes in the same region share the same first digit:
- +1 — North American Numbering Plan (US, Canada, Caribbean)
- +2 — Mostly Africa (e.g., +20 Egypt, +27 South Africa, +234 Nigeria)
- +3 / +4 — Europe (e.g., +33 France, +44 UK, +49 Germany)
- +5 — South America (e.g., +55 Brazil, +54 Argentina)
- +6 — Southeast Asia & Oceania (e.g., +61 Australia, +62 Indonesia)
- +7 — Russia & Kazakhstan (shared)
- +8 — East Asia (e.g., +81 Japan, +86 China, +82 South Korea)
- +9 — Middle East & South Asia (e.g., +91 India, +92 Pakistan, +971 UAE)
