Canadian Provinces & Territories

All 13 Canadian provinces and territories, with active area codes, populations, time zones, and capitals. Canada uses the +1 country code under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), administered by the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA).

About Canadian area codes

Canada shares the +1 country code with the United States and 20+ Caribbean territories under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). Within Canada, numbering is administered by the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA), which works with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to assign new area codes as demand requires.

Canadian area code assignments follow the same rules as the US: each area code is a 3-digit NPA prefix, with the middle digit always 0–8 and the first digit always 2–9. Canadian phone numbers follow the standard 10-digit NANP format: (NPA) NXX-XXXX. Most Canadian provinces now require 10-digit local dialing because of overlay codes.

The most populous provinces have the most area codes: Ontario (16 codes), Quebec (12 codes), and British Columbia (6 codes). The three territories — Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut — share a single area code (867), which covers an enormous geographic area larger than India.
